Trader Joe's raised hopes that it might do that when it opened a regional distribution center along Interstate 95 in Daytona Beach in 2015, but it still has yet to expand its presence to include a grocery store. Local residents have been lobbying Trader Joe's for years to expand to east Volusia County. When news broke that Lucky's Market planned to close its Ormond Beach location, a real estate executive with California-based upscale grocer Trader Joe's confirmed in emails sent to two local residents that it intended to look into the possibility of opening a store there.īut before it could act, Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets swooped in to secure a deal with the beachside property's landlord to take over the multiple-year lease held by Lucky's Market. Trader Joe's considered opening a store there. THE MAKEOVER: Publix embarks on $3 million renovation of former Ormond Beach Lucky's Market 4. THE FORMAT: Publix opts to open a "traditional" grocery store on East Granada "The funny thing about that location was that three of the four grocery stores prior to Publix - Super X, Florida Choice and Lucky's - had some sort of connection at one time or another to Kroger," said Williamson.ĬOMMITTED FOR LONG HAUL: Publix agrees to multi-year lease of the former Ormond Beach Lucky's Market The store closed after grocery store giant Kroger Co., which had been the biggest financial backer of Lucky's, abruptly withdrew its funding which forced the chain to close most of its stores including all its Florida locations and file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Ormond Beach city officials say they were told the store was one of the stronger performers for the Lucky's chain. It closed its doors just 10 months later. The upscale Lucky's Market's amenities included the in-store beer, wine and espresso drink service, a sushi/ramen bar, an apothecary, a deli that offered ready-to-eat meals, and a cafe seating area that featured live entertainment on weekends. It opened to huge crowds in May 2019. It then became a Florida Choice Food & Drug store followed by Food Lion.Īfter Food Lion closed its Ormond Beach store in 2012, the building remained vacant for seven years until Colorado-based Lucky's Market opened its doors after reportedly spending $5 million to completely gut and re-do the interior. It was built in 1982 as a Super X Market, according to Ormond Beach resident Donald Williamson, a local history buff. The standalone retail building that the new East Granada Publix occupies has been home to several grocery stores over the years. The store is also a job creator, employing approximately 130 full- and part-time workers led by store manager Kathryn Keener. It will have an outdoor seating area as well. The new East Granada Publix will also offer an in-store bakery, deli and floral department, as well as produce, seafood, meat and cheese departments. Beer can also be purchased by the pint or in a growler to take home. The shopping carts will include cup holders. The POURS department at the East Granada Publix will serve a selection of local draft beers including seasonal varieties that customers can purchase by the glass or in a flight of four samples that can be consumed either at the in-store bar or while shopping. The department is a concept that Publix created for its new chain of upscale GreenWise Markets and is similar to what Lucky's Market used to offer. The department, located on the west side of the store, will also serve acai bowls, which are essentially fruit smoothies made from acai berries in a bowl that can be covered with toppings of the customer's choosing. POURS customers can purchase a craft beer or glass of wine or a smoothie or freshly brewed coffee or kombucha tea. But it has something the others don't: it's the chain's first in Volusia County to offer a POURS department. The new 27,981-square-foot store is just three miles away from two larger beachside Publix supermarkets in Ormond-by-the-Sea and at Bellair Plaza in Daytona Beach.
